Dynamics GP end of life: the dates, and what to do about them.

Microsoft Dynamics GP, formerly Great Plains, reaches end of support on December 31, 2029, with security patches ending April 30, 2031, and Microsoft has closed it to new customers. Lightbridge ERP is an independent, vendor-neutral ERP advisory firm that helps Great Plains customers choose the right successor platform and leads the migration through delivery.

The Dynamics GP end-of-life timeline, in plain dates.

Microsoft has placed Dynamics GP on a published, closing schedule. The current Dynamics GP 18.x runs under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, and the end dates are fixed.

Support ends

December 31, 2029

No further product enhancements, regulatory and tax updates, or technical support for Dynamics GP.

Security patches end

April 30, 2031

Security updates and patches, if any are still issued, stop. After this date GP receives no fixes of any kind.

Closed to new customers

April 1, 2026

The final day for new customers to license Dynamics GP subscriptions was April 1, 2026. Microsoft has confirmed the product is in wind-down and steers customers to Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Organizations still on the older fixed-lifecycle releases face tighter deadlines: Dynamics GP 2016 ends extended support on July 14, 2026, and Dynamics GP 2018 on January 11, 2028. Those customers should plan first.

What staying on Dynamics GP past end of life actually risks.

Dynamics GP will keep running after 2029. The question is not whether the software stops, but what exposure accumulates while it runs unsupported. A deliberate decision to stay is defensible; drifting past the dates by default is not.

Compliance drift

After December 31, 2029 there are no tax or regulatory updates. Payroll, sales tax, and statutory calculations fall out of date, and the finance team carries the gap manually.

Security exposure

After April 30, 2031 there are no security patches. Unpatched financial systems raise audit findings, complicate cyber-insurance renewals, and widen the data-protection attack surface.

Ecosystem decay

Third-party add-ons, ISV products, and integrations built around GP gradually lose vendor support, so a single broken connector can stall close without a clear owner to fix it.

Talent scarcity

The pool of practitioners who know GP deeply shrinks every year. Specialized knowledge concentrates in fewer people, and the risk of a key-person dependency grows.

Business Central is one option, not the only one.

Microsoft positions Dynamics 365 Business Central as the successor to Dynamics GP, and for many Great Plains customers it is a strong, natural fit. It is not automatically the right answer for every organization. A move off GP is the rare moment to reassess the platform on the merits rather than follow the default upgrade path.

Lightbridge ERP runs a structured needs assessment first, then scores Business Central against the full platform landscape, including NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Acumatica, and others, on weighted requirements. Because Lightbridge ERP accepts no vendor kickbacks and carries no reseller quota, the recommendation reflects fit and total cost over the system lifecycle, not a commission. When Business Central is right, Lightbridge ERP says so, and leads the build through a vetted Microsoft partner under its own project management and technical leadership.

How Lightbridge ERP leads a migration off Dynamics GP.

Needs assessment

Current-state review of GP, customizations, integrations, and reporting, with a requirements set that defines what the successor system must do.

Vendor-neutral selection

Business Central scored against NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Acumatica, and others on weighted requirements. Driven by fit, never by a quota.

Data migration strategy

A defined plan separating open transactional data from historical records, with GP history archived for audit rather than dragged into the new system.

Project management

Scope governance, milestone control, risk management, and cutover planning. Lightbridge ERP owns the timeline and the accountability for it.

Technical leadership

Senior oversight of configuration, conversion, and integration. Vetted partners execute hands-on build against the architecture Lightbridge ERP defines.

Finance and close depth

Chart-of-accounts redesign, intercompany, and month-end close architecture, drawing on the Lightbridge ERP in-house FP&A and EPM practice.

Hands-on Business Central configuration and build are delivered by vetted Microsoft partners under Lightbridge ERP project management and technical leadership. In-house hands-on delivery is reserved for NetSuite and EPM/FP&A. See the Microsoft Dynamics 365 practice for platform detail.

When to start a Dynamics GP migration.

Start planning a Dynamics GP migration as soon as the December 31, 2029 support-end date is inside your normal system-replacement horizon, which for most mid-market finance organizations means now. A move off Great Plains takes three to nine months once a platform is chosen, and selection itself takes time to do well. Lightbridge ERP is an independent, vendor-neutral ERP advisory firm that assesses requirements, recommends the right successor on the merits, and leads the migration through delivery with in-house project management and technical leadership.

Dynamics GP end of life: frequently asked questions

When does Microsoft Dynamics GP reach end of life?
Microsoft will end Dynamics GP support on December 31, 2029 for product enhancements, regulatory and tax updates, and technical support. Security updates and patches, if needed, will be provided only until April 30, 2031. After those dates the product receives no further investment. Microsoft has also closed Dynamics GP to new customers, with new-customer subscription licensing ending April 1, 2026, so Great Plains is a closing platform on a published timeline, not an open-ended one.
What happens if we stay on Dynamics GP after 2029?
The software keeps running, but the risk profile changes. After December 31, 2029 there are no tax or regulatory updates, so payroll and compliance calculations drift out of date. After April 30, 2031 there are no security patches, which raises audit, cyber-insurance, and data-protection exposure. Third-party add-ons and integrations gradually lose vendor support around the same window. Staying is a decision to accept growing compliance and security risk, and it should be made deliberately, not by default.
Is Dynamics 365 Business Central the only option for Great Plains customers?
No. Microsoft positions Dynamics 365 Business Central as the successor to Dynamics GP, and it is often a strong fit, but it is not automatically the right answer for every organization. Lightbridge ERP is an independent, vendor-neutral ERP advisory firm. It runs a structured needs assessment and scores Business Central against the full platform landscape, including NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Acumatica, and others, so the destination is chosen on fit, not on a vendor default.
How long does a migration off Dynamics GP take?
A typical mid-market move off Dynamics GP runs three to nine months from selection to go-live, depending on the number of entities, the depth of customization and add-ons, and the volume of historical data to convert. The biggest schedule risks are undocumented GP customizations, integrations built over years, and chart-of-accounts cleanup. Lightbridge ERP front-loads those risks in the assessment so the timeline reflects the real estate, not an optimistic guess.
What happens to our historical Dynamics GP data?
Historical data is migrated on a defined strategy rather than lifted wholesale. Lightbridge ERP separates the open transactional data that the new system needs to operate from the historical records that are better served by trial balances, summarized history, or a read-only archive. That decision is set during the assessment so the new platform starts clean and fast, while the GP history stays accessible for audit and reporting.
Which Dynamics GP versions are already out of support?
The older fixed-lifecycle releases are already past their support dates. Dynamics GP 2016 reaches end of extended support on July 14, 2026, and Dynamics GP 2018 reaches end of extended support on January 11, 2028. Current Dynamics GP 18.x runs under the Modern Lifecycle Policy and follows the December 31, 2029 support-end and April 30, 2031 security-patch dates. Organizations on the older fixed-lifecycle versions face the tighter deadline and should plan first.
Why use an independent advisor instead of a Business Central reseller?
A Business Central reseller is compensated when you buy Business Central, so the recommendation is settled before the assessment starts. Lightbridge ERP accepts no vendor kickbacks, no reseller margins, and no partner-tier quotas. It assesses whether Business Central, NetSuite, or another platform fits, then leads the migration with in-house project management and technical leadership. Hands-on Business Central build is delivered by vetted partners under that leadership, so one accountable owner runs the program.
